Self Hypnosis & Public Speaking

I have to admit that I’ve been somewhat of a “class clown” most of my life and getting in front of a group has never been a huge problem for me. Even in grade school, I never hesitated to volunteer to read at our weekly Church mass. Thats why I’m always amazed to read how people rank a fear of public speaking right up there with fear of death! I won’t sit here and tell you I never get “butterflies” in my stomach before speaking to a group, but I don’t have the reaction that many do.

I have become much more sympathetic with those that have a hard time with public speaking. Seeing someone up in front of a crowd with their voice cracking, profusely sweating underarms and shaking terribly, isn’t a pretty site. Being able to relax before I get up to speak helps me tremendously. The best way that I have found to relax is by using self hypnosis. Taking some deep breaths while closing my eyes and giving myself plenty of positive images, positive re-enforcement and positive outcomes, has been a real boost for me.

If you’re new to public speaking or perhaps you’ve been speaking for years but only do it because you “have” to, I would certainly recommend hypnosis as a way to prepare before a speech. Those fears and worries will be substantially reduced if not eliminated when you learn some hypnosis techniques to help you prepare.

Good idea - and it’s nice to see you suggesting this is “a” way to prepare. I’m a presentation skills trainer and I seem to be fighting a bit of a losing crusade with people who say they’ve got “the” way of getting things sorted out.

Different ways work for different people. I’m not saying don’t use hypnosis - far from it! I used it recently on two training days I used this week.

    Good stuff.

I dont care what the method is as long as it can save me from the lack luster person that I am.

I want to be more confident and more smart.

Hypnosis may well help with things like confidence but don’t forget that’s only a part of the issue. Knowing what to say and how to say it is the major part!

There are plenty of advice sites and Ebooks around if you don’t fancy face-to-face training but that might be the best way forward for you if you’re feeling that you’re a “lack-lustre” presenter.

I have heard of this before but I’m not sure how it works still….

I have a problem with stuttering, will this program help me for that?

I get really nervous in front of people. My hands start to sweat and my face starts to tingle. I used to talk really quiet and now that I’m older I’m a bit better at it but I still talk to fast. I should try the “deep breaths” to get some oxygen back to my bright red face!

Careful! If the ‘big breaths’ are in the wrong place (your upper chest) you’ll just make the situation worse. When people say ‘big breaths’ they should be saying “low, slow big breaths” because the main advantage of “big breaths” is that you use you diaphragm.

Using your diaphragm instead of you upper chest (the inter-costal muscles) releases a whole host of neve-combating hormones.
