Treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) With Hypnosis

Remember to always have your symptoms diagnosed by a medical practitioner or doctor. It is important to remember that you cannot self diagnose irritable bowel syndrome and there are many serious conditions that can mimic IBS. Always consult your doctor before trying any alternative treatments for IBS.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome, (or IBS as it’s more commonly referred to as), has been proven to be very responsive to hypnosis / self hypnosis. Just how responsive you might ask? From the studies and articles I’ve seen, hypnosis can reduce or eliminate symptoms in anywhere from 75% to 95% of patients! This is really good news to IBS sufferers because the effectiveness of most medically prescribed drugs has been relatively low and inconsistent.
So why should you consider the use of hypnosis to alleviate IBS symptoms? The obvious reason is the remarkable success rate that has been achieved with hypnosis, (up to 95% in some cases!). Couple that with the fact that many IBS sufferers have noted a side benefit with a reduction in migraines & tension headaches. The treatment is comfortable with no adverse side effects. The effects of treating IBS with hypnosis typically last much longer that other forms of treatment and the IBS patient uses the power of the own mind & body to bring about beneficial changes vs. using potentially harmful drugs & medications.

Thank you so much for this information. IBS is just something that traditional treatment does not touch.
Hi Brenda,
I’m glad you found the information useful! I don’t suffer from IBS, but I’ve heard great things about the results that can be achieved with hypnosis.
Thanks for your comment!
Chris
I’m ready to try it out!
Interesting information, 95% is quite remarkable. On a related, but slightly different note. I was reading scientific americian earlier today, about psychosomatic illnesses. Those are illnesses that are caused by, or at least influenced by the mind. IBS was one of those listed as being effected by the mind, in terms of stress and general negativity. The other major one was heart attacks, and how something like 70% of people who experience heart attacks were angry or very angry in the 2 hours prior to their attack.
just goes to show you the imtimate link between the body and mind.
Hypnotherapy for IBS is certainly effective for most people. 95% sounds a bit high. Professor Whorwell at Manchester Uni has been running a Hypnosis Unit at the Gastroenterology Dept for many years - and has shown 71% effectiveness with benefits showing long term effect - e.g. after 5 years most people had maintained or even improved the symptom reduction.
I have IBS and it is a very unpredictable problem. Some days I am fine and others I am not. I have some medicine that works, but I never know when to take it. I have been trying to get used to taking it if I get stressed out or eat something heavy. I would love to try something that can clear problem up almost totally.
Well Im glad their something that can help it. Nothing worse than a servere case of explosive diarrhea
Hypnotherapy is definitely a good option for IBS sufferers, and as you say there are plenty of studies to show it. As an IBS sufferer of 17 years standing (maybe that’s not something to boast about!) I’ve heard a lot of people say that hypno has helped them.
I tried it myself and it didn’t so much for me, but then no one approach is going to fix everyone, especially as IBS sufferers vary so much in their symptoms and severities. I wish more doctors would recommend hypnotherapy, far too many just mumble something about watching what you eat and learning to live with it.
I will have to try this new program. I hope it will help me with my IBS. Never thought about hypnosis before as an option.
I don’t have IBS, but that is definitely an interesting find. Why wouldn’t you want to help get rid of something that starts with Irritable?
I heard hypnosis can help a lot of different problems. I going to look in to this.
